Breaking Down the Big Decisions for your Big Day - Advice from the Experts.

Updated: Mar 13

When it comes to your wedding everyone has an opinion. From your dress to the décor, food to your final "good byes", someone has advice. However, what worked for someone else, doesn't mean it works for you. Our team of experts, with close to 50 years combined experience, have seen it all and are shedding some light on what can be the most magical and expensive event of your life. Check out our Q&A with Omni Amelia Island Resort's events and wedding team.

What is an absolute “must” when it comes to picking out decorations for your reception?

Let your personal style be your guide You don’t want to look back at your wedding and think “that didn’t even look like me.”  Focus what’s on important to you.  It may be that you want to focus on statement furniture and custom linen or lighting and draped ceiling treatments may be more important to you.  Most importantly, you don’t have to do it all.

Lighting can make or break an event, but to create the right ambience, you don't necessarily need to hire professionals to cast patterns on the dance floor. You can set the mood simply by flanking an outdoor walkway with dozens of luminarias or setting dining tables with elegant candelabra or clusters of small candles; you might also replace white bulbs in fixtures with more flattering amber colored ones.

Where should I spend my money in the reception to really make it “WOW”?

"Guests are going to remember one to two things when it comes to a good reception - food and entertainment." - The Weddings Team

Food - Make sure that you have an exquisite caterer that knows how to make high quality food and will ensure outstanding service. Set up a full menu tasting well in advance of the event to prevent last minute emergencies and guarantee you are getting what you want.

Entertainment – Joy and laughter is the foundation of your guests memories of your wedding. Make sure it is a great time! An underrated DJ or band can be a real party killer. Read reviews, check for insurance, look for videos or demos of their work to ensure they will create the right atmosphere of fun for your friends and family.

What advice would you give to a couple deciding on their “colors”?

Go with what speaks true to you.  If you like pink, go for pink.  If you are into neutrals, go with a mixture of white, ivory and champagne.

Take your significant other’s opinion into account. We have all experienced how laid back and hands-off some significant others can be, but making choices together can ensure everyone is happy!

What’s the favorite design trend you’ve noticed recently?

What should you consider when deciding between venues?

  • Is your venue budget friendly? - There are countless venues to choose from for your wedding, however, the reality is not every venue will fit within your budget. Determine what you can afford per person before contacting venues. This will avoid the frustrations of falling in love with a wedding venue you simply cannot afford.

  • Package inclusions -  Understand what comes with your venue package. One venue may appear more affordable, but could requires you rent all of your chairs, linens and additional décor in addition to the cost of the space. This can be overwhelming, and also highly expensive.

  • Are there back-up plans in the event of an unexpected weather incident? - When it comes to outdoor receptions be sure to ask if the venue offers any back up space options in the event of inclement weather. The last thing you want is to be stuck out in the rain.

What should I know about venue contracts?

Read the details! Make sure you understand what the contract is stating. If you don’t, don't be shy in asking questions. Things to double check are:

  • Financials - Make sure you review all of the financial aspects of the contract (sales tax, service charge, and more).

  • Package Inclusions - Make sure you know what is included in your package. Check for things like chairs, tables, linens, times you have use of the venue, areas available to use at the venue, staff available for assistance and more.

  • Dates: What are the deadlines for cancellation, changes and deposits.

We want to make sure that our couples know exactly what they are getting when they book with us and we are more than happy to explain if and when they need assistance.
